Overview of the 7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb

The 7-day Lemosho Route is one of the best trekking routes on Kilimanjaro due to its gradual ascent profile and stunning scenery. It’s often described as the most beautiful trail, starting from the western side of Kilimanjaro and winding through untouched rainforests and remote wilderness areas before merging with the Machame Route at Shira Plateau. Because of the longer distance and extra days for acclimatization, this route has a success rate of 90% to 95%, significantly reducing the risks of altitude sickness.

This 7-day climb is perfect for trekkers looking for a less crowded route with diverse landscapes, including lush rainforests, sweeping moorlands, volcanic rocks, and breathtaking glaciers near the summit. Whether you’re looking for a group joining tour or a private climb, our 7-day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro climbing tour package ensures a comfortable and rewarding experience.

Detailed 7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

  • Distance: 6 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Elevation: 2,100m to 2,750m

Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Londorossi Gate, where you will complete registration and meet your guides and porters. From here, you’ll trek through the untouched rainforests on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, where you may spot Colobus monkeys, elephants, or even buffalo. You’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp ("Big Tree Camp") for your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking time: 5-6 hours
  • Elevation: 2,750m to 3,500m

Leaving the rainforest behind, today’s hike takes you through a landscape that shifts from lush greenery to heather and moorland. You’ll start to experience the wide-open vistas of the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude desert formed by volcanic activity. The trail is steeper today, but the views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance make the climb worth it. You’ll camp at Shira 1 Camp.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Distance: 7 km
  • Hiking time: 4-5 hours
  • Elevation: 3,500m to 3,850m

Today’s trek is more relaxed, allowing your body to acclimatize while you traverse the stunning Shira Plateau. You’ll pass through unique alpine meadows, enjoying spectacular views of the summit and the surrounding landscapes. You’ll reach Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll spend the night under the clear African skies.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking time: 7-8 hours
  • Elevation: 3,850m to 3,960m (via 4,640m at Lava Tower)

This is an important acclimatization day. You’ll ascend from Shira 2 Camp to the iconic Lava Tower at 4,640 meters, where you’ll have lunch and spend some time adjusting to the altitude. Afterward, you’ll descend into the Barranco Valley, which offers striking views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. You’ll camp at Barranco Camp, nestled beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking time: 4-5 hours
  • Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m

Your adventure today involves the exhilarating climb of the Barranco Wall, a steep and challenging rock scramble that is often a highlight of the trek. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the Heim Glacier and Kilimanjaro’s southern face. The trail then becomes easier as you cross rolling hills to reach Karanga Camp, where you’ll rest for the night.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m

This is a shorter, yet important day as you prepare for the final push to the summit. After a steady climb, you’ll reach Barafu Camp in the early afternoon. You’ll have plenty of time to eat, hydrate, and rest before the summit attempt, which will begin just after midnight.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • Distance: 17 km
  • Hiking time: 10-14 hours
  • Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), descent to 3,080m

Summit day! You’ll wake up around midnight to begin your ascent under the stars. The climb to Stella Point (5,739m) is the most physically demanding portion of the trek, but once you reach the rim of the crater, you’ll continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Watching the sunrise from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro is a memory that will last a lifetime. After taking your summit photos, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp for the night.
